How to Deal With the Solid Waste After Autoclave

To avoid the pollution spread inside the laboratory, the method to deal with the waste after autoclave includes:
The separate collection, store, centralized processing. Using recycling, solidify and incineration disposal as much as possible, and choose the suitable methods to test in practice working to reduce the waste and pollution. Waste discharge should meet the standard requirement of the government.



1.Chemical type waste
Normally chemical waste gas is diluted by air before exhaustion. A large amount of poisonous gas should be burned or diluted by oxygen before discharge.
And waste liquid should choose the container and storage place according to its chemical characteristics, and stored by sealed container, and mixed storage is not allowed, and the container should be labeled with the name and storage time of the waste, and the waste should be disposed of periodically. And normally, the liquid waste could be disposed by acid-base neutralization, coagulating sedimentation, sodium hypochlorite oxidation before discharge, and the organic solution should be recycled according to the characteristics.
2.Waste liquid that contains mercury
Discharge standard 3: The highest content of the mercury inside the waste liquid cannot be higher than 0.05mg/L.
A. Sulfide coprecipitation method: Adjust the PH value of the mercury waste to 8-10, and then add Na2S to generate HgS sediment. Add FeSO4, to sediment the excessive S2, and also sediment the HgS, and then let stand, separate, centrifuge, and filter, the mercury content of the liquid could be decreased to lower than 0.05mg/L.
B. reduction method: Adopting copper scale, iron scale, zinc granule, sodium borohydride as the reductant to recycle the metal mercury.
3.Waste liquid that contains cadmium
A. Hydroxide precipitation method: Put lime to the liquid that contains cadmium, and adjust the PH to 10.5 and above, mix it thoroughly and wait some time to make the cadmium to the Cd(OH)2 sediment, and then separate the sediment, and check the Cd ion (decrease to 0.1mg/L), to make the PH value inside the liquid to 7, and then discharge.
4. Solid waste after autoclave
The solid waste includes pipet tips, flasks, absorbent materials, tubes, etc.:
A. Be careful of the pressurized containers.
B. Waste must be sterilized after the sterilization.
C.Waste must be cooled to room temperature before disposal.
D.Liquid waste must never go to the drainage system
E. Put the bags or sterilized containers into heavy bags, and closed securely to ensure no leakage.
F. And then put the heavy bags into a box, and close the box and label non-hazardous waste, date, the person who responsible for it, and phone number.
G. All the leaks should be cleaned immediately by the responsible individual. And never allow the other staffs to clean the leaks. And before clean the leaks, the responsible individual should allow the autoclave to cool before cleaning. If glass breaks inside the autoclave, do not clean the glass by hand, please use tongs, forceps, or other mechanical means.
